Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend following the team's ten-game without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton manager - who played over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they start the process of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock choice given he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to provide any compensation.
